THE TOWER’S HISTORY
The tower was built as a memorial to the Swedish sailors who lost their lives on board Swedish merchant ships during World War I. The names of the 690 sailors who died, 15 of whom were women, and the 98 ships that were wrecked, are inscribed on the base of the tower. An additional 103 foreign sailors also died in these disasters. A further 434 Swedish sailors on board foreign ships also died but their names are not on the tower base either. Perhaps there were even more.

In 1928 it was decided to build a tower as a monument beside the future Maritime Museum in Gothenburg. The monument was to be freestanding and not associated with the Maritime Museum. The City of Gothenburg would be responsible for the tower’s operation and maintenance. The museum building, which was designed by Karl M. Bengtson, was finished in April 1933, but due to a strike by construction workers, the sculpture Kvinna vid havet (Woman by the Sea) was not put in place until a year later. The tower was inaugurated on the same day as the Maritime Museum, 14 July 1933, by King Gustaf V.

The tower’s 194 steps lead up to the top, where the bronze sculpture Kvinna vid havet, popularly called “The Sailor’s Wife”, by Ivar Johnsson stands looking out across the river. The tower’s highest point is 62 metres above sea level and the entire tower, excluding the bronze sculpture, is 49 metres high. There is a lift but it does not go all the way up.

“The tower has its place in the history of Swedish working life and is typical of its time,” says Karl Hellervik, curator at the Maritime Museum and Aquarium. The structure was received almost as an insult by the people who were its subject: sailors and their surviving relatives. During World War I, the sailors had been promised unemployment insurance, an eight-hour work day and more. But instead of a better life, they were given a monument.
